Having left Bordeaux on Sunday 18th of May, the Belem arrived in the port of Funchal, the capital of Madeira on Thursday 29th after a calm and mostly sunny voyage. According to Captain Joël Guéna's Special Logbook for Landlubbers (i.e. his regular mails to the Foundation), once past the coast of Spain, when the Belem took to more open sea on her way South, there was enough nor'wester to fill her sails by day but not quite enough to keep the desired pace, so it meant using the engines at night.
On this first lap on her month-long crossing of the Atlantic to Boston and then on to Québec, the Belem was carrying a group of 46 trainees, who all came off at Madeira. On the second and longest lap, the only people on board will be the crew and one solitary traveller : Michel Germain, writer and proficient amateur sailor, is keeping a daily record of the ship's adventures – to be related here every week.
