 The Belem logbook
Another unforgettable week for the Belem and all who sailed upon her, thanks to the warm welcome, eager interest and enthusiastic curiosity of the people of Montreal, her second port of call in Quebec.

Departure from Quebec City at 2 o'clock in the morning on Monday July 7th was followed by 14 hours of sailing up the Saint Laurent River until the town of Trois Rivieres came into sight, exactly halfway between Quebec  and Montreal. There, the Belem stopped overnight - well, not quite overnight since she lay at anchor only until 4 a.m. fully lit up, however, for the benefit of the « Trifluviens », otherwise known as the inhabitants of Trois Rivieres ; one of them, an amateur photographer, was up early enough to capture the Belem by the first faint light of dawn and mailed the very moving result straight on board.

Tuesday afternoon, the skyscrapers of Montreal, the « metropolis » of Quebec, appeared on the horizon and by 5 o'clock, notwithstanding a strong adverse current, the Belem was docked at her berth in the Old Harbour, where the Mayor of Montreal and the French Consul General were waiting to greet her. During the next four days, the beautiful three master ship from France was opened to the public who came in droves, reaching an all-time high of 2025 visitors on the Saturday, many of them sporting brand new « Belem Quebec » caps ! As often the case with the Belem, there were a few « surprise » visitors, such as Leon Simard whose father Joseph had met Sir Arthur Guiness, one-time owner of the Belem, then renamed « Fantôme II » and had bought from him the Belem's predecessor « Fantôme I » (which he later resold to the the Greek multi-millionnaire Onassis...). Now aged 87, Leon was eager to discover the « other » Fantôme...

During the Belem's stay in Montreal, the Captain and part of the crew took their leave, as expected after the long crossing from Bordeaux. Captain Joel Guena was replaced by Captain Jean Alain Morzadec, raring to go and sail down the Saint Laurent on the way back to Quebec. So, on Sunday 13th, the Belem set sail in pouring rain for the first lap of her return journey.
